Northwestern Frosh Smashes Freestyle Mark BEACON JOURNAL SPORTS By HARRY HI MPHRIES Asseelatet PreM Spans Writer COLUMBUS, March 27. A 19-year-old Polish-American, who was 12 yean old before he learned to speak English and who expects to enter the U. S. army ski troops within three weeka, set the swimming world afire today with the posting of 22.1 seconds for the 50-yard free style, slashing .5 seconds from a world record that had stood 20 years. Henry Kozlowski, Northwestern university freshman, made the new mark in winning the National Collegiate Athletic associa tion championship in the Ohio State natatorium.

Meet officials described his accomplishment aa one of the greatest in competitive swimming history. Kozlowski, whose entry came in too late to appear on the meet's official program, earlier had equalled the 22.6-second record twice in qualifying trials. The mark was set in 1923 by Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii and matched in 1934 by Peter Fick. Holder of the national scholastic record of 62.4 seconds in the 100-yard free style, the Chicago youth will seek the N.C.A.A. crown in that event today.

Opposing him will be Ohio State's Bill Smith, Hawaiian holder of every world free style record between 100 yards and a mile and winner last night of the 220-yard N.C.A.A. free style title. As the meet entered its second and final day, Ohio State had a virtually safe lead of 49 points to 23 for second place Michigan with only five events to go. Minnesota, with seven, was third. Frank Dempsey, Ohio State's champion diver, retained Mi one-meter board title and today defends his three-meter crown.

Today's other events are the 440-yard free style, 400-yard relay and 200-yard breast stroke. TEN MARCH 27, 1943 Rice Breaks World Two-Mile Mark In Cleveland K. C. Relays TIME OUT!
