"There have been dust storms on Mars recently, so it has lost some of its characteristic reddish hue," said Horkheimer. "It's taken on a sort of glowing, golden color." He added that on Sept. 21, Mars will be closer to the Earth than it has been since 1971. While Horkheimer drew hoots from the audience over the toilet paper telescope, Eugene Capriot-ti, head of the astronomy department at Ohio State University, brought a more serious note. Capriotti is working with scientists at the University of Arizona and the University of Chicago, as well as Italian astronomers, to build the world's largest telescope.

It will be located outside Tucson, Ariz. The telescope, which will cost $60 million to build, is being financed almost entirely from private funds. Ohio State's share of the bill raised privately is $15 million, he said. Capriotti said the telescope, known as the Columbus Project, will enable scientists to view galaxies in detail that now appear as mere smudges in the sky. Capriotti expects to have the telescope in use by the mid-1990s.

A group of conservationists in Arizona have opposed the building of the telescope, claiming it will displace an endangered species of squirrels. "It's been a pain in the neck," said Capriotti. "It isolates celestial objects and intensifies their colors," Horkheimer said of the makeshift telescope.

Looking at the constellation Pleiades with a toilet paper tube on each eye "is almost a religious experience," he said. Horkheimer, who calls himself a "science popularizer," was the key speaker at the annual convention of Akron's Astronomy Club, held at the University of Akron's Knight Auditorium. "We brought him here because he's great at taking complicated subjects and bringing them down to a level everyone can understand," said Lauri Kunkell of Akron, president of the club. "He makes everything about astronomy fascinating." Horkheimer noted that Mars is clearly visible over Akron after midnight these days. It can be seen with the naked eye, but a 1 WHS If) died Aug.
