The company was select, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves hugely.

Even Co. G's staid Captain seemed to torg-t his troubles and "closed up" on that good old tunc with an agility which would have done credit to Fanny EUsler's best days. The language of the immortal Artemus immediately rose to my mind, and with him I exclaimed, "Go in you gay and festife cuss," and in imitation of the aforesaid gentleman af'Jerome's ball, I axed Senator so-and-so's daughter if she would'nt glide in the mazy dance. In coming from the latter city, we saw a little of the infernal work of tho rebels, in the remains of the bridges ovei Salt River and Rolling Forks. They are now spanned by new ones not yet fully completed, yet answering the purpose for crossing with care.

We made many acquaintances at Louisville, traversed the streets several times in full Battery, amid the cheers of her citizens and wavings of flags. Many presents have been made the company there, in the shape of pies, cakes, segars, Suffice it to say, we left many dear friends there, and shall never forget them. Ou our way from Louisville here, we found a great deal of enthusiasm manifest; at about every house the Stars and Stripes were displayed, and without doubt the great mass of the people are loyal to the Union. For 25 miles out, the country is made up of bogs and barren wastes, and the hovels along are dignified into dwellings but the latter part of the route is wild in the extreme, running thro' a tunnel seven hundred yards long; for several miles the road is guarded by Hecker's regiment from Illinois, I think, This point is the extreme over which tho federal authorities hold sway. There will soon be an advance movement.

This is, (as I before stated,) in Gen. Sherman's division and (Jen. McCook's Brigade; from east to west our lines extend some eight miles, in all some 50,000 men, and our for-oes being augmented every day.
